Music

Hello St. Andrew’s Congregation,
I’ve been back at St. Andrew’s for 2 months now, and I still haven’t gotten over how good it is to be back!
In this month’s article, I was going to tell the long version of why I made the decision to leave the other church. However, I realized I’d need a book for that! Suffice it to say that coming back to St. Andrew’s had made me realize afresh just how special it is as a church and a community.
Everyone that is here, is here because they truly value a rare combination of adherence to tradition in liturgy, worship, and Christian practice; but also an open mind to change, new ways of doing things, and reform as time passes. The lesson I’ve learned is that as a musician, not only is that rare to have in the church you work for, but it is also necessary. And the reason that this attitude is necessary for a thriving church music environment is because creativity cannot flourish when it is either suppressed by too many rules or not tied to any form of tradition.
Therefore, I look forward to an even more explosively creative season of my musical life than before… complete with the hymn suggestions from all of you!
God Bless!
Your Music Director,
~Audrey Drennen
