In conjunction with Children’s Day, we had our annual Strawberry Festival, which is really just an excuse to eat strawberry shortcake, and be glad of this red delicious fruit that is ripe at the same time as the end of the church school year! While you may usually find it made with a “shortcake” biscuit, our version is a luscious layering of pound cake, vanilla ice cream, fresh cut strawberries and whipped cream. No one usually complains about having to eat this concoction! It was a tradition to hold the strawberry festival with Children’s Day
before my tenure as the Vestry Fellowship member and hopefully will continue to be one long afterwards.
One of the joys of Children’s Day is that we have a combined service. This means that our 8 o’clock church family members get the chance to join us for coffee hour, which is always a treat. I enjoy seeing our church body together in fellowship and know that great conversations about summer adventures, new jobs, graduation, and the rainy weather are in full flow. It’s at these times that the body of the church moves in mysterious ways as God puts us together to support, lift-up, and inspire one another on to good works, service, and community. Maybe there is even a discussion or two about the next Open Mic night and what our talented musicians will bring to the stage, or how we can bring newcomers and young families to VBS. This all happens at coffee hour.
I miss this Fellowship activity in the summer, since coffee hour wanes during the summer months, so we came up with the idea for what I call “Pop-Up” Coffee in the narthex. That means taking the wood table in the front and putting out coffee, tea, the appropriate accompaniments, and allowing guests and attendees to linger a little in the atrium over a cup before making their way on to their Sunday schedules. With the acquisition of two airpots this makes it especially easy to do.
If you would like to serve your fellow parishioners with Fellowship this summer please consider signing-up to host Pop-Up Coffee by either signing up on paper outside of the Upper Hall or clicking here to sign-up.
Happy Summer,
Julia Sanders
