MUSIC

Greetings St. Andrew’s!

These days, I find myself quite busy, and not in a reflective mood. My desire to analyze, reflect, and ponder about all things musical has taken the back burner. I’m sure most of you can relate to this feeling in your own lives– feeling less creative and ill at ease when we’ve been “functioning” for too long is all too prevalent an experience!

Ironically, feeling this way made me think of something truly worth pondering: that the purpose and power of music comes through most potently in seasons such as these, when we feel dry, tired, lifeless...

It is the fact that music is above logic, analysis, and introspection that makes it so valuable. Because it comes and reaches into us. It is one less thing in life that we have to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps to “go seek out,” so to speak. It does not require effort like the comprehension of words. It is a receptive experience like hearing words, but even more so because its reception isn’t hindered by the level of our intellect. It comes in through the back door... catching our souls off guard, elevating us, causing us to feel emotions we didn’t even ask for.

Of course, knowing this about music is nothing new, but sometimes it leaves me in awe to just step back and ponder this fact... that we have the capacity to receive something into our souls as wordlessly impactful as music.

I hope you experience some “musical balm” at St. Andrew’s this season, if your tired soul is in need like mine.

Your Music Director,

~Audrey Drennen
