This Wednesday, we will once more receive the mark of Ashes and hear the heavy, sad tunes of Lent waver through the air.
And it seems all too recent that the choir loft was full of choristers in red sweaters and “Halleluiahs!” announcing Christ’s birth.
Time flies and too little in life remains constant. This hit home the other day as I practiced. It takes labor, thought, and love to practice music, but only an instant to pass once it’s performed. And in a similar vein, the solemn Lenten saying reminds us about ourselves: “Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return.”
Are all things in vain, we wonder, if everything seems to come to an end?
Well, musical moments may pass, but music itself remains eternal. Our bodies may fail, but the spirit lives on. May this season of Lent not cast us into discouragement, but remind us of eternal things and redirect our hope. In the Lenten music at St. Andrew’s this season, may you hear not the sounds of death but the promise of new life.
